Supporting The Sharks

Alot of people I know from my youth are all around the world. I moved to Cape Town and am loving it here but still cannot support Province which I call Problems. I guess it comes from growing up in Durban and supporting the Sharks when they were still Natal. When I went to my first game they were playing in the B league and were not very good but it was a family affair and a big jol after the game. Kings park has always been know for its after parties as the stadium is surrounded by rugby fields and the all turn into party locations after the game. The place was amazing loads of companies would hire tents put on a huge spreads of food and alcohol. AS kids we played late into the night all over the place and when we grew up it just became a place  have a jol. We would go as a group and have the best times and always have some friends dads party tent to go to. It got better when Natal won the curry cup for the first time in 100 years but the party was now also about the rugby. This is why and will always be the reason I will always be a Shark supporter.

Warner Beach is a small resort on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast set in between Kingsburgh and Amanzimtoti. The beaches here are all shark-protected and patrolled by lifeguards during all school holidays. Warner Beach has a tidal pool and the visitor will find excellent surfing conditions, surf angling and lagoon bathing and boating.

In total there are seven kilometers of beach front where the visitor can enjoy some excellent sea swimming. In the lagoon one can hire rowing boats and canoes, and there is some excellent birdwatching to be found at the bird sanctuary.

Place of play

Our neighbouring town was Amanzimtoti the holiday Mecca for all the Lemmings ( rats that migrate to the ocean once a year and commit suicide ). That’s what we called people from inland mainly Johannesburg they would come down once a year and just do the most crazy things. We had a sign on a wall at the beach that read “ amount of Dutchman that trip over this speedbump” and on the wall we would have a counting system and everytime someone tripped over the speedbump someone would jump up and mark it infront of the person that had just tripped, this had some really mixed emotions. Mostly of the locals laughing their arses off. Now as this town was a holiday destination all the bars, night clubs were situated there and this is were everyone went to party. In the holiday season things would be get drunk pick on the holiday makers and get into a fight. When they left and holiday season was over we would get drunk and fight with each other. You could always go to Toti and watch a fight almost every week it was crazy. We all did it caused trouble with each or joined together to out the Dutchman. Then there is and I think always will be the pecking order to see who is the strongest and best at fighting. In my day it most a friend of mine, lets just call him Sean. He was cool and he never got into a fight unless the other person caused it. I never saw anyone beat him but I saw alot of people try. This was the fighting side of our night life in Toti. Now don’t get me wrong this is not all that happened here it was one of the weekend attractions. We had alot of great times here, there was this bar called “longbar” supposedly the longest bar in southern Africa (whatever). The cool thing about it in those day no ladies were allowed in so all the boys would meet there first get there courage up and meet the ladies at the disco. Sometimes I never found enough courage to even leave the bar. It was a pool bar where you played pool, smoked and drank large beers. This was my town of dreams and disappointments this was Toti.

My Life lesson 1

The place the people and all the happenings around this time were not all great but I believe in some way these are the things that we need to do in order to become the people we are. Also we have the choice to always choose what we want, we cannot blame our situations or the people around us. We are in the places we are because of the choices we made. I sometimes wonder how different things would be if some thing we di could be changed. Look don’t be mistaken I wish I could choose to change alot of things I did but that time is gone and I can only change what I am going to do. Some people think if we go back in time we could change things but for me if those things did not happen then I would not have learnt from them. I have hurt a few people in my past that I am not proud of and am sorry that they got hurt (really). But this is the life we live and I believe that somehow I have learnt to be more careful about the way I handle people today. I am still getting it wrong but hey thats how I learn and of course you can never please everyone that would just be way to boring. So go out there and be all you can be and enjoy doing what your doing with others or change your friends.

THe amazing VDL's

One family which I love and feel as almost part of the family, I will call the VDL’s. These guys today are still very much part of my life even though they still live in Warners and I live in Cape Town. There are 3 kids and there parents. The reason I am not revealing there names is some of the things we did around them might seem totally unacceptable to some people. This part is to honour them not to shame them. Anyways enough with the whatevers. Snowy and myself first met the son one night out in Toti and this was the start of an amazing friendship. There mom picked us up from the club and this is where I first met her. She is no longer with us and if I say everytime I see the rest of them I still miss her like mad. She was an amazing lady who never judged anyone, don’t get me wrong she would tune you if you were out of line but never judge.
I remember she always put her kids first and treated all of us so well. I miss you alot and know you are in a better place. The Dad is still a legend and still dig to pop in and see him when I am in town. These guys were very much of my growing up and in some ways shape the person I am today there are a few families that were part of that but these okes are still a huge part of my life.

Trip up the coast

Thought I would tell you about a trip we took as kids up to Hibedene up the south coast of Durban. It was mostly because Snowys chick at the time was up there and he was doing major spade work ( courting ) at the time. So there were 4 of us Gav, Wok, Snowy and myself and off we go with all our stuff on a train. The trip up was great the train went all along the coast and you get to check out all the surf along the way. We had no plan just going to rock up and play it by ear from there. We arrived in the afternoon to cooking surf so surf our brains out but Gav had to watch our stuff on the beach so he only got to surf the next day. We slept on the beach that night we were in our element. Snowys chick basically diched us and we just hung on the beach. I scored with some babe from near the caravan park all was turning out for the best but night 2 was freezing so the next day we decided to bail. We got as far as Park Rennie where my Grandparents lived so we stayed over at their place. I remember Gav and myself were sick from the cold and my Gran rubbing us down with vicks all all the other okes ripping us off well mostly Gav. We got the train back home the next day we had a great trip and one of those trips I will always remember.
